The Frost Fever 5k, Operation Code Name: Sega Genesis, was a success. There was a great showing of some pretty fast people for a race in the middle of winter. The day was pretty warm for a Montana winter so that made for some muddy, painful fun.
As the race started I found myself being shuffled around mid pack thanks to my last second dash to the car to grab my heart rate monitor. Once out of the start area I was set to make up the distance to the front of the race. At mile 1 the running pack had loosened up as I worked my way up to, what I could see was, about 20th place.
Despite not having any speedwork I managed a pretty fast pace and continued to catch people. At mile 2 I was in the top 15. I continued to run at a pretty hard pace and managed to make it to mile 3 in 10th place. I always have a sprint in me so I let it loose about 40 seconds from the finish line. I caught two more people, one guy I overtook right at the finish line with a place-saving forward lean track and field style.
I finished in 8th and won the 20-29 age division. For the middle of winter I am happy with an age win.
